When illustrator Clara Gilod noticed that the families in her young son’s card games looked nothing like their own, she decided to change that. Drawing from her own experiences and the diversity of families around her, she reimagined the classic French "le jeu de sept familles" Quartett game as Merry Families—an inclusive kids card game that celebrates rainbow families in all their forms.

From queer and multicultural households to single parents, families without children, grandparents raising grandkids, and family members of every ability, this game shows kids that there’s no single way to be a family. Some families even have cats and dogs!

Beautifully illustrated and sustainably made, Merry Families sparks conversation, builds empathy, and keeps players laughing from the first card to the last.

It’s an inclusive kids card game in the Quartett format, featuring diverse family types, including rainbow families, blended families, and single parents. The goal of the game is to gather as many sets of families as possible.

How many players can join?

2–5 players. It’s suitable for both small and larger groups.

What’s the recommended age?

Ages 5+, with simple rules for young children and enough variety for older kids and adults to enjoy together.

Is the game multilingual?

Yes! Cards feature simple, universal designs without text, making it easy to play across languages. The instruction card is printed in German, but we have French and English versions

How sustainable is Merry Families?

Printed in Europe on FSC-certified recycled paper with zero plastic. Producing each deck emits about 0.13kg CO2, which our supplier offsets by 110%. More about our supply chain here.

Materials + Life Cycle

Our card decks are printed Cradle to Cradle certified Silver in Melk, Austria.

This means: only renewable energy was used in production, and the materials (FSC-certified paper and non-toxic inks) are safe and fully recyclable.

About 0,13kg CO2e is emitted from making each deck. This includes production of the paper, plates, and inks, the printing itself, and the delivery from our supplier in Austria to our warehouse in Berlin.

About the Artist

A French illustrator based in Berlin, Clara Gilod works mostly on children books and editorial illustrations.

She finds inspiration in nature and the streets and people of Berlin. Her work is feminist, queer and aims to capture various points of view from her surrounding world.

In her illustrations, Clara depicts a diverse and non-conformist society, one that is too often forgotten in children's books and games.
